Maybe you don’t have a playground or park area near you, but you probably have a blank wall or floor that could some sprucing up. A mural is a great way to make a place more inviting and it’s a creative way to spread your Do Something message!
The Type of Mural
With the property owner’s permission, you can put up a mural almost anywhere. Decide if you want to paint one large picture against a wall or on the asphalt. If you have a lot of people helping you, consider splitting the mural into squares or sections, much like a quilt.
What It Should Say
Whether many pictures or one giant scene, your mural should have an idea or message. Will it be about peace or the environment? Will you be drawing the famous landmarks and people in your community? Draw out a sketch or write an outline of what you would like it to look like.
Gathering the Materials
Take that sketch or outline and show your neighbors, local business owners, or anyone else who might help you out. Ask these people to donate paint, paintbrushes, cups, buckets and measuring tools (yard sticks or rulers) for your project.
Get to Work
A mural looks great with variety, so think about mixing your paints in different cups/pails you’ve collected to make as many colors as you can. If you are using the quilt pattern, use your measuring tools to divide the mural. Now it’s time to start making your artistic statement!
Have Others See It
Thank everyone who helped you, and tell them how it turned out. Show them pictures, and invite anyone who might be interested in the space. Take it further by organizing an event to celebrate the creation of the mural!
